Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

Fresh homemade ice cream is definitely a favorite treat around here.  We enjoy it anytime but it is especially fun to make it when we have friends over.  When our friend’s kids see the ingredients turn into ice cream, just by using the ice cream maker they are amazed.  For kids that are old enough, it’s fun for them to help mix up the ingredients before putting it into the ice cream maker.

One of the benefits of making your own ice cream is that you know what you are putting into it.  Obviously it still has plenty of sugar (so I wouldn’t claim to be “healthy”), but there are no artificial colorings or preservatives in this ice cream.

To make, you’ll need an ice cream maker.  I have a Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt & Ice Cream Maker with the insert that you freeze for 24 hours before using.   This is a simple, easy, and delicious vanilla ice cream.  No stove-top cooking prep needed.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
2 cups heavy whipping cream

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients well with either a whisk, blender, or beaters.  Make sure sugar has been completely dissolved.  Place mixture into an ice cream maker and allow to churn for 20-25 minutes, until it has reached soft-serve consistency.  Serve at soft-serve consistency or freeze 3-4 hours to allow ice cream to harden up.

Serve alone, on top of a dessert, or with your favorite toppings.

If you are really feeling adventurous, try serving it with my homemade hot fudge sauce. Double YUM!
