DIY Cosmetic Bag Instructions

As promised, I made another cosmetic bag and photoed the process as to be able to post my own instructions.

2 pieces canvas fabric 10 inches  x 14 inches each
1 piece canvas 2 inches x 5 inches
1 piece of fabric interfacing 10 inches x 14 inches
1 (9-inch) zipper
measuring tape
pins,  1 safety pin
sewing machine

1. Cut your two canvas fabrics and fabric interfacing into 10 inch by 14 inch rectangles.  Iron your interfacing onto your outside fabric.  This will help to make the fabric stiffer to keep the box-shape.

2. Line up  your zipper on the left side of your fabric.  Pin down.  (I found, doing the zipper in this order is the easiest).

3. Rotate your fabric and sew the zipper on, lining up the foot with the zipper.  Once you are about 1/2 way down, unzip your zipper past where you have sewn.  (This allows you to avoid sewing next to the pull-part of the zipper).

4.  Lay your zipper flat and iron.  Sew a straight line down next to the zipper, on your top fabric.  This will help keep the zipper flat.

5.  Line up your zipper with the other side of your fabric (with the outside fabric facing up).  Pin to hold in place.

6.  Sew the other side of the zipper down.  While sewing, leave the zipper unzipped for the first half.  Once you’ve reached about half-ways, zip your zipper and continue sewing.  (This allows you to avoid sewing next to the bulk of the zipper pull).

7. As before, sew down the top fabric next to the zipper.  This helps keep the zipper flat.

8.  Take your 2 inch x 5 inch piece of canvas, fold in half, inside out.  Sew 1/4 inch seam.

9.  Using a safety pin, and connect through only one side.  Push the safety pin though the loop to get your outside fabric facing out.

10.  Remove the safety pin and iron flat.

11. Sew down each side, as close to the outside as possible.

12.  Flip your bag as shown below.  Measure to make sure your zipper is placed in the middle.

13. Fold your tab in half (or use ribbon) and place inside next to the top of the zipper.  The fold goes to the middle and the ends to the edge.

14. Pin and sew, close to the top of the zipper.  Go back and forth several times over the zipper, to strength the bag (shown 2 photos below).

15. Repeat the process for the other side, unzipping your zipper first as you will need it unzipped to flip your bag right-side-out.   Cut excess fabric off.

16.  Sew each of the 4  corner as shown below,  1.5 inches from the “tip.”  I measured and taped a line on my sewing machine.  I kept the tip on the line (see above photos for the taped line).

Once your 4 corners are sewn, your bag will look as follows:

17. Cut the extra fabric triangle of fabric off the corners.

18. Flip your bag right-side-out, you’re DONE! WOOHOO!

Happy Thursday everyone!  Good luck creating yours!  Let me know if you make one and how it goes!  I would love to hear any feedback!
