DIY Cosmetic Bag

Earlier this week, I found a tutorial on how to make this adorable little box-shaped cosmetic bag.  Yesterday, I got motivated to go on a little impromptu trip to Hobby Lobby to get the fabric and zipper (about 20 minutes away).  It took me about an hour to sew the bag after my kids went to bed last night.  I will tell you though, I had spent some time watching the tutorial video and reading the directions before I started.  If you get a good understanding of the project before you start, you will notice it is quicker and easier to complete.

Taking your time on projects like this is definitely a must.  Don’t try to race through it as you will see that in the end result.  Make sure to line up everything, pin things down, and go slow when doing the zipper, it can be a tiny bit tricky.  This bag was the first zipper I ever did, and I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty proud of the outcome.  (Alright, enough about the slow-and-steady wins the race spiel).

I’m very excited about how quickly and relatively easily these cosmetic bags are. Thinking many gifts in the future! (This one was actually a gift for a little 2 year old girl today).  But seriously, think of the possibilities… teacher gifts, Valentine’s gifts for your girl friends, Christmas gifts, gift one (or 14) for yourself.  The possibilities are endless!

Now mine isn’t 100% perfect, but it’s close and seriously, I’m in love.  I was actually a little sad to give this away today since it is so freaking cute! (But have no fear I have more fabric and another zipper, so I can make one to keep!)

White canvas on the inside.  Cute fabric on the outside.  Bold zipper.  It’s just darling!

Click HERE for the site I got the tutorial.  I have plans to make another one of these later this week.  I will photo and write out more of my own directions then.  I was in a bit of a time crunch to make this for the birthday girl so I will include the list of supplies below and click through to the link above for directions.

2 pieces 10×14 inch canvas fabric
1 piece 10×14 inch fabric interfacing
9 inch zipper
5 inches ribbon (optional) for tag
iron and ironing board

Happy DIY-ing!
